Global plastic production has surged from 2 million tonnes in 1950 to over 400 million tonnes annually. Single-use plastics linger in the environment for centuries, with bags lasting 20 years, bottles 450 years, and fishing lines 600 years. Only 9% of plastic is recycled, 12% is incinerated, and 79% accumulates in landfills or the environment.
