In a world overwhelmed by environmental challenges, it is both refreshing and inspiring to encounter individuals who choose action over apathy. In celebration of women's month, we are taking a closer look at one such individual, South Africa’s own Zoë Prinsloo, the passionate founder of the “Save-A-Fishie” campaign. Her journey from a young girl cleaning beaches to a nationally recognised environmental activist is a powerful reminder that meaningful change can start with a single step.

Background

Zoë’s story began at a remarkably young age. At just 10 years old, through her involvement in the Girl Guides, she participated in her first beach clean-up. What she saw left a lasting impression—coastlines littered with plastic straws, bottles, and waste that had no place in nature. Instead of walking away, she chose to act. By the age of 16, she had officially launched Save-a-Fishie, transforming her concern into a mission to protect marine life and reduce pollution.

Why 'Save-A-Fishie' ?

The name “Save A Fishie” itself carries a heartfelt origin. During one clean-up, Zoë rescued a small fish trapped in plastic waste, an experience that symbolised the very real impact of human behaviour on ocean life. From that moment, her purpose became clear: protect marine ecosystems by tackling pollution at its source.

Her mission

Zoë's mission is straightforward yet impactful: to significantly reduce single-use plastics, safeguard marine biodiversity, and inspire individuals to take responsibility for environmental stewardship. Through regular beach and river clean-ups, awareness campaigns, and the promotion of eco-friendly alternatives, she has built a movement that empowers individuals to make better choices in their daily lives. Her philosophy is grounded in the belief that small, consistent actions can collectively lead to significant change.

Coast-to-Coast Campaign

One of her most ambitious initiatives is the Coast-to-Coast Campaign, in which Zoë, her mother, and a dedicated team travel across South Africa to clean beaches and waterways. The Coast-to-Coast Campaign has successfully covered over 100 beaches, removing an estimated 16 tons of waste, connecting communities, raising awareness, and demonstrating the power of collective action.

Zoë highlighted that environmental stewardship is both a family commitment and a national responsibility. The Coast-to-Coast campaign is a family enterprise with Zoë, her mom Tanya, and sister Jamie traveling across South Africa for beach clean-ups, community engagement, and youth education on environmental protection. Zoë acknowledged her mother's influence, stating, "My mom was instrumental from the outset, and we continue to maintain a strong partnership."

The importance of youth education

Beyond clean-ups, Zoë places a strong emphasis on education, particularly among the youth. She understands that lasting change depends on shaping attitudes early in life. Through school engagements, community events, and hands-on participation in clean-ups, she encourages young people to develop a genuine love for nature. By helping them see the direct link between their actions and the health of oceans and rivers, she fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility. As she has highlighted through her work, when young people are empowered with knowledge and experience, they become the next generation of environmental guardians.

Her achievements

Zoë's dedication to environmental conservation has earned international recognition. She has represented South Africa in global forums, participated in key discussions, and highlighted the importance of individual contributions to environmental protection. Save-a-fishie has removed over 60 tonnes of litter from beaches and coastal areas, setting a world record for a 27-hour continuous beach clean-up. Zoë has been a prominent voice at the United Nations Youth Climate Summit and was honored as one of the Top 100 African Youth Conservation Leaders. Her accolades include the Mayor's Medal Civic Award, the Paul Harris Fellow Award, and the Caroline Reid Eco Warrior Award. She has also represented South Africa at the Helen Storrow Seminar in Switzerland and was invited to speak at the Our Ocean Conference in Korea. Zoë and her mom launched the Coast-to-Coast campaign, a significant initiative for coastal conservation in South Africa.

The Journey to Cleaner Oceans

Amidst the daunting challenges of environmental issues, Zoë Prinsloo emerges as a beacon of hope. She demonstrates that age is no obstacle to effecting change and that passion, when paired with action, can inspire a whole nation. Zoë is more than just an activist; she is a positive role model. Her journey inspires us to observe our environment, assume responsibility, and contribute in any way possible. As her work clearly demonstrates, protecting the environment does not necessitate grand gestures; it requires a willingness to care, take action, and motivate others to do likewise. We look forward to welcoming Zoë and Save-a-Fishie to the Eastern Cape in the near future.
