What Defines a Mass Extinction Event?

A mass extinction event occurs when a significant percentage of all living species on Earth disappear in a relatively short geological period. The five previous events wiped out between 70% and 96% of species, often caused by volcanic eruptions, asteroid impacts, or drastic climate shifts. The current concern is that species are vanishing at rates much faster than natural background extinction rates.   • The 1st, End-Ordovician Extinction (about 444 million years ago) was mainly caused by rapid cooling, glaciation and falling sea levels, eliminating many marine species.

  • The 2nd, Late Devonian Extinction (about 372–359 million years ago) occurred through a prolonged series of extinction pulses, involving ocean oxygen loss, climate change and possibly volcanic activity, severely affecting marine life.

  • The 3rd, Permian-Triassic Extinction (about 252 million years ago) was the most devastating, with massive volcanic eruptions causing extreme climate change and ocean acidification; around 90% of marine species and 70% of terrestrial vertebrate species disappeared.

  • The 4th, Triassic-Jurassic Extinction (about 201 million years ago) was probably driven by massive volcanic eruptions and climate disruption, eliminating many competing species and allowing dinosaurs to become dominant.

  • The 5th, Cretaceous-Paleogene Extinction (about 66 million years ago) was triggered primarily by a huge asteroid impact, causing dramatic environmental changes and the extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs, along with many other species.

  • Government policies, such as the Trump administration's July 2026 modification of the Endangered Species Act, have facilitated habitat destruction by permitting logging, mining, drilling, agriculture, and development in areas that were previously protected.


Additional instances include the Amazon rainforest, which hosts millions of species and has witnessed a reduction of approximately 17% in its forest cover over the past 50 years due to logging and agricultural activities. This decline poses a threat to numerous species that depend on this habitat.

Why Biodiversity Loss Matters for Humans

Biodiversity supports ecosystem services essential for human life, such as:


  • Pollination of crops by insects like bees

  • Water purification by wetlands and forests

  • Climate regulation through carbon storage

  • Soil fertility maintained by diverse organisms

  • Medicinal resources derived from plants and animals


When species vanish, these services deteriorate. For example, the decline of pollinators such as bees poses a threat to global food production. Similarly, the loss of forests diminishes carbon absorption, exacerbating climate change. The collapse of ecosystems can also increase the spread of diseases. When natural predators decline, populations of disease-carrying animals can rise, increasing risks to human health.

  • The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists over 37,000 species as threatened with extinction.

  • Amphibians, like frogs, toads and salamanders, have the highest extinction risk, with about 40% of species declining.

  • Large mammals, such as elephants and rhinos, face severe population drops due to poaching and habitat loss.

  • Ocean species suffer from overfishing and warming waters, with coral reefs declining by nearly 50% in the last 30 years.


These trends indicate that extinction is not a distant threat but is rapidly becoming a present reality.

What Can Be Done to Slow or Prevent This Extinction?

Addressing this crisis requires global cooperation and local action, something which has not been forthcoming Some effective strategies include:

  • Restoring degraded ecosystems through reforestation and wetland recovery.

  • Reducing carbon emissions to limit climate change impacts.

  • Controlling invasive species with monitoring and removal programs.

  • Sustainable resource use to prevent overexploitation.

Community involvement is also vital. Locally people can help monitor wildlife, reduce pollution, and promote sustainable practices.
