According to UN Climate Change News, on September 30, 2024, it was reported that in 2022, 1.05 billion tons of food that was fit for human consumption were wasted or lost throughout the food supply chain. At the same time, 783 million people went hungry, and one-third of the global population faced daily food insecurity. The food that ended up in landfills could have nourished approximately 3 billion people, highlighting significant inefficiencies in the global food system. This situation is unacceptable, and we must do better.


Beyond the statistics, food waste has far-reaching environmental, economic, and social consequences. It accounts for around 25% of annual greenhouse gas emissions, making it the third-largest emitter after China and the U.S. This underscores the urgent need for effective strategies to tackle food waste as a significant contributor to climate change.

Food waste occurs at different stages in the supply chain, varying between developing and developed countries. In developing countries, 40% of food waste happens during post-harvest and processing due to inadequate infrastructure, limited technology, and poor storage facilities. Conversely, in developed countries, 40% of waste occurs at the retail and consumer levels. These differences highlight the need for tailored solutions based on regional challenges and capabilities.

At the retail stage, a significant amount of food is discarded for aesthetic reasons, reflecting consumer perceptions and market standards. In the U.S., over 50% of produce is thrown away for being "too ugly," leading to about 60 million tons of wasted fruits and vegetables annually. Food Waste in South Africa

In South Africa, 10 million tonnes of food are wasted annually, a third of its 31 million tonnes produced. Hunger has risen since 2014, with 828 million people affected globally in 2021. The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), based in Rome, reports 1.6 billion tons of food wasted globally each year, with 1.3 billion tons being edible. About 13% of food is lost between harvest and retail, and 17% is wasted in households, food services, and retail. The UN General Assembly has designated 29 September as the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW), encouraging actions to reduce food loss and waste, enhance food security, create sustainable food systems, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In today's world, the issue of food waste has become increasingly pressing, with significant implications for both the environment and society. This practice not only helps avoid impulse buying but also ensures that perishable items are used before they spoil.

Applying the "first in, first out" principle by using older food items before newer ones reduces waste and maximises your grocery budget. These strategies collectively promote a sustainable lifestyle, minimising waste and fostering healthier eating habits.

Leftovers are often a source of waste, but with a little creativity, they can be transformed into new meals. For example, leftover vegetables can be added to soups or stews, while stale bread can be repurposed into croutons or breadcrumbs.
